Description

Feed Grade Urea is an economical substitute for protein in rations for cattle, sheep and goats due to its high protein (*N) concentration and relatively low cost compared to natural protein sources.

Feed Grade Urea has a distinctive green colour and a fine particle size that prevents segregation in mixed feeds- 85% of the particles have a diameter of between 0,5 and 2 mm.

Feed Grande Urea is only recommended for use by ruminants (cattle, sheep and goats) and has no nutritional value for monogastric animals such as poultry and pigs and can be fatal if fed to these animals.

Feeding recommendations:

Urea can be used in a wide range of mixtures such as maintenance licks, production licks, feedlot rations and also for treatment of low-quality roughage.

Adaption:

Urea has a bitter taste and can also lead to urea poisoning and animals should therefore be adapted to urea containing mixtures by slowly increasing the amount given over a period of 10 days.

Precautions:

The following precautions should be taken into account when feeding urea containing licks:

Sufficient grazing and/or roughage should be available at all times
Keep lick troughs full. A constant daily intake prevents overeating that could result in poisoning
Hungry animals must not have free access to urea-containing licks
Before feeding a lick containing urea, feed a plain salt/phosphate lick for at least 7 days
Protect the lick against rain. Urea is highly soluble in water and animals drinking such a solution may be poisoned

Vinegar as a remedy for urea poisoning

Item	Recommendation / Dosage
Vinegar	Vinegar is stated to be an effective remedy against urea poisoning.
Preparation	Mix vinegar with an equal amount of water.
Calves / large sheep	Give ½ bottle of the vinegar-and-water mixture.
Cattle	Give 2–4 bottles per head of the vinegar-and-water mixture.
Bottle size	1 bottle of vinegar = 750 ml.
If vinegar is unavailable	Use twice the quantity of cold water.
Precaution when administering	Be careful not to get any liquid into the lungs of the affected animal.
Sugar	Sugar may also be given with the mixture.
