The control box can also be called a regulator. Its job is to generate a fixed output voltage that remains constant regardless of changes to its input voltage from the dynamo, this safeguards electrical components within the tractors electrical System. 

Over time the control box will need to be replaced as the points inside wear and come out of adjustment, it used to be a common practice to service them, but due to the relatively cheap replacement price it makes more sense to fit a new one. If you have a faulty control box, it may cause your battery to not receive enough charge, get overcharged or be exposed to an excessive charging voltage

It’s a simple job to replace the control box, usually mounted on the tractor with two fixing points. The control box terminals are labelled to make it easier when your reconnecting the wiring loom.
